URPoint Details

A lovely little village with delightful houses and buildings on the River Blyth set in fabulous countryside. The oldest Meeting House in the country was built here in 1607. The contemporary fittings in wood are interesting. To the southwest is the lovely Heveningham Hall. The villages of Walpole St Peter and Walpole St Andrew have merged to become one parish and are now known as just Walpole. Due to its close proximity to the Lincolnshire border in what was once marshland. Walpole Island was an island in the marshes which stretched from Wisbech to the coast. This is the area where King John is supposed to have lost treasure, unfortunately none has been found as yet, but people keep looking. The church of Walpole St Peter, known as the Cathedral of the Fens’ and is famous for its flower festival. The church was built in the 13th century and the altar end is raised up to go over an ancient footpath known as ‘The Chase’. This makes a passageway under the church, known locally as the ‘bolthole’. The footpath links the village with Walpole St Andrew.
