The Romans were here and there are still traces of the stone paving roads of their camp Segedunum. The camp marked the limit of Hadrian’s Wall and gave the town its name of Wallsend. The eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall.
Ship-building still flourishes here, but the most famous ship launched here in 1907 was the Mauretania.
