Since early times the site of an ancient ford over the River Thames, now crossed by a 900 ft long bridge, some of the original 13th century stonework is still there.
The Romans settled here, and the Anglo-Saxons certainly did as traces of a rampart can still be seen. In 1006 the Danes destroyed Wallingford.
The town has many timber-framed and Georgian buildings and The White Hart is early 16th century, the Lamb Hotel is Georgian and the George Inn is where Dick Turpin stayed is probably 17th century.
