Waddesdon

Waddesdon , England

URPoint Details

Waddesdon stands on the busy Aylesbury to Bicester road and is known the world over for the great treasures to be found in Waddesdon Manor, the home of the Rothschilds and one of the most noble mansions in the country.

The village itself has many features of the Rothschild patronage including extensive half?timbered estate housing, the school, the Five Arrows pub, the village hall, the almshouses, and the club and reading room. They are generally of the 19th century style. The church, however, is much older. It includes extensive late Norman work, in particular the fine south doorway of 1185. There are interesting monuments here, as well as an alabaster pulpit that was given to the church by the Duke of Marlborough. He was said to have purchased it at the 1851 Exhibition.
