In the beautiful Vale of Yarrow lies threaded by stream that flows through the lovely Yarrow Vale, then joins the Ettrick to form a tributary of the River Tweed.

Many ballads, songs and poems have been written about the beautiful Yarrow Vale including Scott, Hogg and Wordsworth.

There are some charming historic places of interest in the area including the Buccleuch Mansion, Bowhill, Newark Castle and Philiphaugh where in 1645 General Leslie of the Covenanters defeated Montrose.

The remains of Hangingshaw Tower and the 17th century church at Yarrow and at the crossroads is an angler’s inn.

To the west of the Kirk off the Moffat road is the Yarrow or Liberalis Stone at Whitefield excavated by chance by a plough during the 19th century. It commemorates the battle of Yarrow in 592 when two sons of Liberalis died.
