URPoint Details

The town takes its name from the river on which it stands, Usk means ‘water’.

There are broad meadows and is renown for its excellent salmon fishing and inns especially those around Twyn Square.

Usk has long being a market centre for the surrounding rural area.
Burrium, the Roman station was here before the town and was an important fort.

All that remains of the castle are a gateway, a keep, round tower and remains of living quarters, yet still retains grace and dignity of the finest architecture.

In 1174 Benedictine nuns founded a house of which the church of St Mary still exists.
The nave, north aisle and tower are all still in use.
There are many Norman, Perpendicular and late Decorated works to the church and there is a curious circular stair turret. There are also some interesting monuments including an inscribed brass dating from 1400.
The Nunnery gateway still stands.
