An intensively planted and manicured garden created by the 2nd Lord Bearsted after 1927, overlaying the late 17th century features. The main garden lies hidden beyond the lawn south of the house and is reached by a grand 20th century stone staircase by Morley Horder, the architect, who remodelled the house. This leads to a series of terraces housing the national collection of asters with a kitchen garden below, stillused for growing fruit and vegetables. This is bounded to the south by a lake, to the east by double herbaceous borders and to the west by two small formal gardens – one a yew – enclosed rose garden, the other (Her Ladyship's Garden) for assorted flowers. Cascades of wisteria and spray roses overhang the terrace, The beds along the south front of the house are planted in blue and yellow, Below the house to the west is a yew walk and bog garden with banqueting pavilion, now a gardener's cottage.
