Upminster - Church of St Laurence

Corbets Tey Rd, Upminster RM14 2BB

URPoint Details

It is believed that a church was here before the Conquest, as Upminster means the church on the hill is mentioned in the Domesday Book.

The present church had its beginnings in the 13th century, but had many additions and alterations and in 1862 was completely renovated. There still remain some interesting old brasses and a piece of medieval glass.

Buried in 1400, leaving some money to the parish was the notorious woman Alice Perrers, one time mistress of Edward III. She became lord of the manor of Gaynes through her marriage to Sir William Windsore.
