There has been a church on the village green since the Middle Ages and in 1832 to put a stop to gravediggers resurrecting bodies and selling them to the medical school in Aberdeen a Mort-House was built by the villagers.
The circular stone and slate building still stands.
The Udnys have been the leading family since the 14th century and their castle stands above the village.
In the 17th century, ornamental turrets were added to this impressive, 100ft high, five storey tower-house.
