Tynemouth Castle and Priory, (EH), near North Pier. Open April to October, daily 10am-6pm. November to March, Wednesday to Sunday 10am-4pm. Closed 24/26 December & 1 January. Gun battery open noon Friday to Monday. Admission charge; suitable picnics; dogs on leads only. Explore underground chambers beneath the World War I gun batteries! Disabled parking next to Hall through main gates on left; parking space is limited. Hall: from car park, approach along back of Hall to avoid one set of four steps; then two steps up to door; three rooms accessible on ground floor, but a staircase of twenty steps leads to the first floor. Garden: accessible; lower garden approached by a flight of steps. Shop in Old Hall. Recommended for visually impaired visitors; house has many interesting contents, many of which may be touched; garden has scented plants and herbs.
The castle walls and gatehouse enclose the substantial remains of a Benedictine priory founds around 1090 on a Saxon monastic site. Their strategic importance has made the castle and priory the target for attack for many centuries,
In World War I, coastal batteries in the castle defended the mouth of the Tyne.
