A picturesque town on the banks of the Dove, with a wide main street a delightful Tudor and Georgian houses, and the Dog and Partridge is a 15th century half-timbered inn.
The priory church of St Mary, built in 1100 is one of the finest Norman churches in the Midlands.
Its west front built some fifty years later has a magnificent doorway and seven arches with rich carving.
The ruins of a once-imposing castle include three towers, one built by John of Gaunt in the 14th century, a south tower with a winding staircase and two chambers and the high tower in which Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned during 1568 and 1569.
