Lying in a picturesque setting on the Ettrick Water surrounded by the characteristic green and rounded hills of the Lowlands.
To the southwest in a valley sit the remains of Tushielaw Castle where in 1528 Adam Scott a well known Border raider was hanged in his own stronghold by James V.
Also to the southwest is the ruined Thirlestane Tower associated with Sir John Scott.
Thirlestane House dates from the 19th century.
A fine moorland road climbs eastwards from the inn on the way to Hawick.
