Tuppenny Starvers - Easter Tuesday
The Green, Stoke Gifford, Bristol BS34 8PD
URPoint Details
Buns known as ‘tuppenny starvers’ are handed out to the choirboys of St Michael’s Church in Bristol on Easter Tuesday. They have since become a local delicacy, taking on many forms.
The tradition has been going since at least World War Two and may have originated in the Bristol Blitz aerial bombing. Incendiary bombs burned the church out and it struggled through with some repairs until 1999 when falling attendances caused it to close, probably forever.
