The estate has been the seat of the Pakenham family since 1655 and is the largest 17th century castellated castle in Ireland had Gothic additions for the 2nd Lord Longford.

The house has one of the earliest central heating systems and as well as housing a fine collection of portraits and furniture there is a museum of 19th century gadgets with splendid Victorian laundries and kitchens.
