A fine fortress and outstanding medieval manor house, Tretower Castle and Court form a group unique in Wales.
Nowhere else in Britain can five centuries of historic building be traced so graphically.
Building began here in about 1100 on a Norman-earthwork stronghold, later rebuilt in stone and transformed in 1240 by a mighty round tower-keep.
In the later Middle Ages of the early 14th century, however, Tretower\'s owners moved to a more comfortable manor house built nearby.
Raised on a grand scale by Sir Richard Vaughan and then fortified by his son, the 15th century mansion is among the best-preserved in Britain.
Its elaborate timbered roofs are eloquent monuments to the artistry of Welsh carpenters and to Sir Roger\'s status as the wealthiest commoner in Wales.
