URPoint Details

Unsuitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and baby back-packs.
A Yeoman farmhouse dating mainly from the 17th century with squat cylindrical chimneys and oak mullioned windows late 16th century or early 17th century core extended in each succeeding century. Exceptional relic of Lake District life of past centuries.
Its lime-washed walls and slate roof provided a home for generations of the Browne family, well to-do sheep farmers who lived here for more than 400 years. The house and its contents - which include an impressive range of heavy oak furniture - were preserved was largely due to the efforts of the last George Browne (1834-1914), an antiquary and woodcarver.
Townend contains carved oak furniture, including a good example of a traditional Westmorland carved chair dated 1742 Browne family drawings and photographs collection of some 2,000 books, and fascinating domestic implements of the past.
There is a small garden planted with flowers known to have grown there in Edwardian times.
