URPoint Details
There is a rock in Fore Street where legend has it that Brutus, the grandson of Aenas of Troy sailed up the River Dart and founded a settlement here.
The Saxons settled here as did the Normans who built the castle on its steep mound. The church of St Mary is Norman in origin but was reconstructed in the 15th century.
There are many buildings of architectural interest including the two gateways, many 16th to 18th century houses, and the 17th century Guildhall displays some of the locally minted 10th century coins.
