Tortington - Church of St Mary Magdalene

Off Ford Road, Tortington BN18 0FD, England

URPoint Details

Tucked behind a farm and built to serve the lay tenants of Tortington Priory, this tiny rustic St Mary Magdalene’s Church, (Churches Conservation Trust), was restored in around 1860. Its most striking external feature is the splendidly carven Norman south doorway, echoed inside by the Norman chancel arch of Caen stone, highly decorated with an intricate and fearsome design of ‘beak-heads and grotesque faces’. The 12th century font is an unusual shape, appealingly decorated with arcading and cable moulding round the rim.
