URPoint Details
The River Medway with its many streams made this a very important town for the Normans, who built a great castle with magnificent gatehouses added in the 13th century.
There are some fine houses in the town including the 15th century house of the Mayor (Portreeve), and in the High Street is the 16th century Chequers Inn.
The river Medway is the boundary which separates the Men of Kent (to the east) and from the Kentish Men (to the west)
