A moorland village and resort the highest in the Highlands at 1,160ft above sea level, with the main range of the Cairngorms rising to the southwest beyond the valley of the River Avon with Ben Avon rising to 3,843ft in the distance.
There is fine salmon, brown trout and sea trout fishing in the rivers Avon and Livet and in some of the smaller streams.
To the east flows the Conglass Water which is crossed by the road climbing northeast to a height of 1,200ft nearing the Braes of Glenlivet before descending into town.
Southeast of town the famous Lecht road reaches to 2,090ft near the Aberdeen and Banff border on its way to the valley of Don and can be quite treacherous in winter and may be blocked by snow (best to check).
The Avon flows to the west and is then joined by the Conglass Water where the road follows Strath Avon and the Cromdale hills north towards Dalnashaugh on the edge of the Spey Valley.
To the southwest the Avon flows through the remote foothills of the Cairngorms where it is then joined by the Water of Ailnack. This stream together with the Water of Caiplach flows along the Banff and Inverness border in a series of spectacular gorges with the most difficult
