The largest of three villages mentioned in the Domesday Book as Tolleshunta meaning Toll's spring. It is said that an Anglo Saxon chief named Toll settled here.
It is a pretty village with charming houses, such as the lovely Queen Anne D'Arcy house, pubs and a maypole which is a Listed building makes this a real country village.

The church of St Nicholas is Perpendicular with a west tower. The brasses date from the 14th century and there are two fine monuments to Sir Thomas D'Arcy d 1593 and his wife.

D'Arcy Hall, built in 1540 for the family has some fine panelling. The dovecote and the bridge spanning the moat are Elizabethan.
