More a town than a village it sits on a steep slope beside the River Nadder, with a 200ft Tithe Barn is one of the largest in England and the church dates from the 13th century.
The history of Tisbury dates back to the 7th century when an Anglo-Saxon track ran through the village.
The Church of St John the Baptist is in the shape of a cruciform and dates back to the 12th century with 14th and 15th century additions. The wooden porch is timber and panelled ceilings inside are particularly fine. There are some fine memorials to the Arundell family. Lady Blanche who so bravely defended Wardour during the Civil War lies here, so does Catherine Howard’s sister. In the old churchyard stand an enormous Yew tree 36ft in circumference and said to be 1,000 years old. Rudyard Kipling and his parents are buried here. The church was recorded as Grade I listed in 1966
