A large riverside double moated fort built in 1682 as a defence against the Dutch, French and Spanish invasions. Queen Elizabeth I visited Tilbury and addressed the troops prior to their departure to fight the Spanish.
The best and largest example of 17th century military engineering in England, commanding the Thames and showing development of fortifications over the next 200 years. Exhibitions, the powder magazine and the bunker-like 'casemates' demonstrate how the fort protected London from seaborne attack.
