A busy town near the port of Scrabster where the vehicle ferry to the Orkney Isles is located.

The winter wind and seas are so ferocious that stones hurled up by the water sometimes break the windows of the lighthouse.

Thurso Castle northeast of town was partly demolished and byond it stands Harold’s Tower the Sinclair burial place erected over the grave of Harold a former Jarl of Caithness killed in 1196.

West of town on the shores of the bay are the remains of the medieval Bishop’s Palace and Pennyland where Sir William Smith founder of the Boys Brigade was born in 1854.
