Remembered with gratitude in Thringstone are the charitable works of the Right Honourable Charles Booth and his family during their residence at Gracedieu Manor. Mr Booth was the owner of a shopping line and his social work and writings were famous throughout the country. It was due to his beneficence that the Thringstone House Club (now the Community Centre) was built and endowed, and he was a generous benefactor to many local causes in which he frequently took an active part. He died in 1916 and is buried in Thringstone. Mrs Booth was also responsible for the encouragement of local efforts, and she was the founder of the Women's Institute.
Cricket and local sport, generally, had staunch supporters in the Booth family and there were many happy gatherings in the grounds of the Manor when these were thrown open on special occasions. The Club became a recognised centre for social and educational work in the District.
