Thorney - Church of St. Mary the Virgin and St. Botolph
Whittlesey Road, Thorney PE6 0RA, England
URPoint Details
Thorney Abbey built in the 7th century and rebuilt by the Normans after being destroyed by the Danes.
One of the greatest Benedictine Abbeys built and what remains is a tiny portion of a large complex of buildings. At the Dissolution the monastic buildings were dismantled and the stone transported as far afield as Cambridge.
The remains of the Abbey, now the parish church of St Mary and St Botolph (Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust), is formed by the great Norman nave. The aisles were removed and the west front made between Norman stair turrets in 1638. Of particular note is the high screen with its nine niches and figures. The east end of the church dates from 1841.
