URPoint Details

The most northerly of the Fenland islands and it was here a monastery was founded at the end of the 7th century and later destroyed by the invading Danes. At the Dissolution, much of the materials were provided for the building of Corpus Christi College in Cambridge.

Many of the buildings in the village as well as terraced houses were built to the order of the Dukes of Bedford, who owned the village and the abbey lands and were also responsible for much of the drainage of the surrounding fens.
