Thomas John Barnado was born in Dublin in 1866. Aged 21, he went to London to study medicine. He founded the East End Mission in 1867, and this was followed by many other homes in London.
In the late 1870s it was estimated that there were more than 30,000 destitute children in London. Many children owe him a debt of gratitude.
