The castle was rebuilt in the 16th century as the home of the Maitland family, and became the seats of the Earls of Lauderdale.
It was enlarged in the 17th century by the Duke of Lauderdale, who commissioned the magnificent plasterwork ceilings in the state rooms.
It is still a family home and houses the Border Country Life Exhibition with a large collection of early toys in the nursery wing and the old servants' hall serves as the tearoom.
