URPoint Details
The Weir, (NT), 5m west of Hereford. Open February to end of October; Wednesday to Sunday (including Good Friday) & BH Monday 11am-6pm. Admission charge; free car park; no WCs.
Situated on a steeply slope south-facing bank on a bend of the river Wye, part of the Weir Estate given to the national Trust by Roger Parr, who created the garden in the 1920s. Informal garden and riverside, walk with small rockery. Mosaic of woodland and open glades, steep terraces and steps with superb views over the river Wye and to the Black Mountains. The gardens are especially lovely in spring. There is a rustic hut and boat house, and the river bank shows Roman masonry in situ, probably a quay or even a bridge abutments.
