URPoint Details
No dogs or facilities. A 7 acre garden of mystery flanking an 18th century house (not open to the public), with an ornamental facade. Sir George Hastings occupied the house from 1900 to 1911 and planted yew hedges in the garden as a background for his collection of stone statuary. In 1920 Major Goff and his wife, Lady Cecilie moved to the Courts and was influenced by the plantings of Gertrude Jekyll and of Lawrence Johnston at Hidcote, and believing a garden should bring surprises at every turn. Lady Cecilie created the 7 acre garden around the basic hedges and statuary left by Sir George Hastings. The result is 3 acres of formal gardens divided by yew hedges, shrub borders and raised terraces. Features include a conservatory, lily pond, mixed borders and pleached limes. A further 3 acres of arboretum were planted in 1952 with spring bulbs, orchard and hazel coppice.
