There were formerly three parishes, Chignall St James, Chignall St Mary and Chignall Smealy
Chignall St James has had many different names and in 1542 was known as Chickney St James, in 1575 Chignell St James, and sometimes referrd to as Great Chignall.
Chignall Smealy, way back in 1564 was known as Smely Chygnal, then as Little Chignall. The church of St Nicholas dates back to the 16th century. The tower, nave. Chancel and vestry are of Tudor brickwork and there is also a brick font.
