In the 7th century monks from Minster Abbey in Thanet cleared a space in the forest and called it ‘Tentwardene’.
Now a busy market town with one of the most attractive streets in England is lined with Georgian houses and shops and most have the distinct bow window.
William Caxton the father of printing was born here around 1422 and first established the first printing press in England in 1477. He died in 1491.
