A pleasant place on the steep banks of the South Esk River formerly the chief Scottish seat of the Knights Templar, the order having been suppressed in 1312 and the property then passed to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.
The roofless church is 13th and 14th century and has a 17th century east gable belfry.
