A seaport village and herring-fishing centre linking Knapdale and Kintyre and dividing West and East Loch Tarbert.
Near the castle which overlooks the harbour once home of Robert Bruce is an early 14th century chapel with fine grave slabs.
To the northwest rise the hills of South Knapdale among which Sliabh Gaoil rises to 1,840ft.
To the south the road extends along the narrow Kintyre peninsula with views to the island of Gigha.
