URPoint Details
The largest city in the county developed in three stages. First came the old town of which parts still remain. Then the town expanded with the coming of the railways and finally much post-war development.
In 1835 Swindon became a station for the Great Western Railways for the London to Bristol line and within a few years had a rail yard covering 320 acres and employing 12,000 people.
