An intriguing town with unusual buildings including the façade of the Town Hall, which came from the Mercers Hall in Cheapside, London designed by a student of Sir Christopher Wren in 1670 and the Clock Tower near the pier was originally at the end of London Bridge to commemorate the Duke of Wellington.
There is a safe sandy beach in the bay said to have been the scene of a Naval Battle in 877 in which King Alfred beat the Danes.
