Swan Hotel - Bedford

This 17th century hotel on the embankment was once the used as Judges Chambers. In August 1661, Bunyan's second wife Elizabeth begged the Judge (Matthew Hale) to reduce the sentence of three months which had extended into six months. He served 12 years. There is a picture of Elizabeth pleading with the Judges in the Bunyan Museum. The staircase in the hotel came from the original Houghton House.
