Swaffham Bulbeck - Church of St Mary the Virgin, (HE)

St Mary's Church (Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust) with its 13th century west tower and 14th century arcades and chancel makes this a superb old church.

Decorated stone seats and fascinating wooden benches carved with poppy heads, camels, mermaids, animal heads and fish with feet are major features.

A 15th century Italian cedarwood chest portrays the three crosses on Calvary, the resurrection, the ascension, angels and a number of Old Testament scenes. It is thought to have belonged to the family who gave their name to the village.

Many of the windows in the church have intricate 14th century tracery, while the nave windows and highly decorated roof are 15th century.
