Sutton (Cambridgeshire) - Church of St Andrew
URPoint Details
Built on a grand scale, the Church of St Andrew (Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust) not least in its unique 'pepperpot' tower with its octagons, pinnacles and spire which dominates the surrounding fenlands. There is great beauty and dignity in the late 14th century architecture, emphasised by the simple, striking lines of its design.
The church was largely rebuilt by two bishops of Ely, Bishops Barner and Arundel, and their arms and a portrait appear on the roof bosses. Other features include a beautiful carved oak screen, a 15th century font with a four petalled flower design and a wooden cross scarred by shrapnel on Flanders Field.
An outstanding modern stained glass window can be seen on the south side of the chancel and the carved roof of the tower depicts an array of angels, animals and men.
