The town sits by the River Stour and is an ancient borough and was mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and formerly an important cloth and market town.
Weaving is still carried on in the town, once the largest of East Anglia's woollen centres.
Quay Theatre is now a restored Maltings on the River Stour and provides a regular programme of drama, films and music.
Thomas Gainsborough was born here in May 1727 and died in August 1788. He painted his famous ‘The Blue Boy’ around 1770.
The Corn Exchange, Market Hill, built in 1841is now the Public Library.
Market Hill is the centre of the town and in the square is a bronze statue of Thomas Gainsborough.
The Town Hall built in 1828, still houses the Mayor's Parlour.
Salters Hall, now a Public School is a 15th century timber framed building with fine oriel windows.
