A market town on the River Avon a Clyde tributary owes its prosperity to the silk industry in the Middle Ages. Dungavel House, once the shooting lodge of the Dukes of Hamilton.
West of town is Lauder Ha’, the home of Sir Harry Lauder till his death in 1950.
The Powmillon Burn is spanned here by an ancient bridge and it flows through town on its way to join the Avon Water to the southeast.
The remains of Avondale Castle or Strathaven dates from the 15th century and overlook a burn.
