The southernmost village in Suffolk on the Essex border where the river Stour runs through this most beautiful little village lying nestled in the valley of Gun Hill and Stratford Hill. The by-pass road now leaves it for the traveller to find the beautiful historic buildings here.
St Mary's church is a very large and imposing church, well worth visiting and dates from the 12th century.
The Anchor Inn, is a lovely old pub.
Leaving Stratford St Mary, opposite the ‘Swan Hotel’ is a stream and a pond, which has an unusual chain link fence. On the top of the poles animals have been made from wrought iron, such as a swan and a duck.
The ‘Black Horse’, opposite Alderley House, is a very large old pub.
