Stranraer - (An t-Sron Reamhar)
The largest town in old Wigtownshire a terminal for the ferries to and from Ireland is now a very busy port as well as a tourist destination.
Situated in the Rhinns of Galloway at the head of Loch Ryan with the 16th century Castle of St John becoming the town jail, and in the late 17th century held Covenanters during the campaigns of religious persecution.
Near the pier is a house named the North West Castle a former home of Sir John Ross the Arctic explorer.
