URPoint Details
Quaint little village with a store and a couple of lovely thatch cottages make this a real treat to visit.
Stowupland Hall was built in 1810, and a ghostly tale to tell. In the 1920s there was a large dining room, fireplace and two windows. At exactly 8pm every evening once could hear a tapping noise through the skirting board, and the noise was put down to mice!
About twenty years later a new owner also heard this noise and when he died the hall was again sold.
The new owner made alterations made to the inside of the house. Near the front door there was a wide entrance that went straight through the hall. And in one wall there was a place which seemed hollow when tapped. Inside they found the remains of a baby that had been walled up for many years. As soon as the little skeleton had been removed, no further noise was ever heard.
The Crown is a beautiful thatched pub, well worth stopping for a meal or a pint in lovely cosy surroundings.
The ‘Retreat' has a restaurant, good bar meals reasonably priced and a garden where children are well catered for.
