URPoint Details
Built at a height of nearly 800 feet, Stow is the highest town on the Cotswold Hills. Its large Market Square achieves an air of timeless ambience, despite the presence of the old stocks!
The surrounding houses, shops and inns, in mellow Cotswold stone, represent a pleasing blend of styles, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The fine range of speciality antique shops and art galleries are well suited to these elegant buildings.
The medieval Cross is a reminder of the days when up to 20,000 sheep were herded, for sale, into this square.
St Edward's Church, where the Battle of Stow in March 1646, was the final conflict in the English Civil War. The church suffered extensive damage whilst used as prison for the defeated Royalist soldiers. The impressive 17th century Crucifixion scene in the south aisle, thought to be by the Flemish artist De Craeyer, makes a visit to the church worthwhile.
