The house begun in 1721 by Colen Campbell contains furniture by the younger Chippendale, and fine paintings.
King Alfred's Tower, a red-brick folly built in 1772 by Flitcroft at the edge of the estate, is 160ft high, giving fine views over neighbouring counties of Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire.
