The Norsemen in the 11th century made this their base and is famous for its Harris Tweed industry.
To be legally marketed as Harris Tweed, the cloth must be made from pure Scottish wool, spun, dyed and finished in the Outer Hebrides and hand-woven by the islanders in their own homes.

The town is also a safe haven for fishing fleets, yachtsmen and sea-anglers due to its large and safe harbour.
