A fishing port and holiday resort backed by farmland and woods and there is fine rock and cliff scenery around the coastline.
The 15th century tollbooth behind the harbour was used as a warehouse then a courtroom and prison and is now a museum.
Near the harbour stand the mercat Cross and the 18th century Steeple where the Old Pretender was proclaimed king in 1715.
The road leading northwest from town over the hills to Banchory is known as Slug Road and rises to nearly 800ft. To the north of this road is the Roman Camp of Raedykes.
