Abels Bridge on the B1087 south of Ipswich was originally built of wood in the 15th century and divided Essex from Suffolk and in the 16th century a hump bridge was built to allow barges to navigate the river. It was renovated in 1959, and the keystone transferred from the old bridge bears the letter ‘A’ and a bell.
